Ceremony

What's up with the private ceremony?
We're sorry that we can't invite everyone to the ceremony. The site is more than 2 hours drive from Calgary, and at the top of the gondola; the cost to transport everyone there, up the gondola, and back to Calgary would have been overwhelming. However, because we know you want to see the ceremony, we are having it video'ed, and will show the video at the reception for all to see.
Can I get copies of the pictures?
Our photographs will be presented to us on CD, in digital format, approximately 2 weeks after the wedding. We will have small versions which we can email or we may post them online for you to see. If you want prints, don't hesitate to ask for them, and we can send you the full-sized digital file for you to print at your local photograph-printing place. If you know you will want prints in advance, you can bring a blank, writeable CD to the reception, and we will put the photos of your choice on it and mail it to you.
Can I get copies of the video?
Yes, you can! After the wedding, we will be editing the video to include music and possibly video or still images from the ceremony and the reception. If you would like a copy of the ceremony video (unedited or edited), please let us know! (You can also bring a blank, writeable DVD to the reception and we can mail it to you.)

Reception

What is the dress code?
We aren't having a "theme" wedding, but we'd prefer that you be dressed in formal or semi-formal clothes. Please do your best to have shoes with non-marking soles, as this will reduce clean-up and result in the return of our full damage deposit.  Thanks!
What time should I arrive?
The room will be available for guests from 7pm on. A bartender is on site, so feel free to arrive at or just after 7pm. Please arrive before the Bride & Groom!!
What is your smoking policy?
The Thorncliffe Room is non-smoking. No smoking will be permitted inside the venue anywhere. However, there are doors from the room to the outside, and smokers will be allowed to smoke outdoors. Please be respectful of others and do not hold the door open, or allow your smoke to drift inside.

No alternatives will be provided in case of bad weather; no smoking will be allowed in the washrooms, kitchen, or other areas. If you are concerned about weather, we'd recommend the use of nicotine gum or patches for the evening.

We reserve the right to request that you leave should you have problems being respectful about your smoking.
Is there a guest book to sign?
You betcha! However, it will be a little bit different. Melissa is making the guest book, and each page of the book will be for an individual "family unit". This will typically be one page per couple.
You will get a piece of paper to fill out and attach to "your" page, on which we need the correct and full (and legible!) spelling of each guest's name, including titles, for example: Dr. Jane & Mr. John Doe or Mr. Sam Jones & Ms. Angela Smith. Then, you can sign, write or draw on your page and leave us a message for our memories. Feel free to fill the space, or only write a few words; it's YOUR page! Then we will have a photographer set up to take your picture. That person will then record the photo number on your piece of paper, and attach it to your page. Following the wedding, the photos will be printed and attached to the pages of the guest book, so we can remember how fantastic you looked on our special day (and so we can match faces to sometimes un-readable signatures and know who wished us what).
Thank-you cards sent after the wedding will also include a copy of your photo, so you have one for your albums (we understand it's not often that most people get dressed up for photos).
Can I bring my children to the reception?
We will be having an adults-only reception. This is for everyone's enjoyment, not just ours. We know that you won't enjoy yourself if you have to leave the room every few minutes with a crying toddler, nor will you enjoy yourself if you're worried about your 8 year old running out of the room. We won't enjoy ourselves if we have to worry about teenagers under the legal drinking limit getting into the alcohol, or if we have to be careful of the songs we choose because they contain bad language.

I'm sorry if this is upsetting to you, but it is our wedding and we'd appreciate your cooperation.
If you are from out of town and cannot attend because of your children, please contact Melissa; she can assist in finding a local sitter so that you can still attend!
What's for dinner?
Unfortunately, due to financial concerns, we will *not* be serving dinner. We have done all possible to ensure you will have a good time, but we can't afford a full dinner for each guest. We'd be more than happy to make suggestions on where to go for dinner or help arrange a group reservation.

Please note that we're not going to starve you; there will be a "midnight lunch" served around 10pm. We have not yet determined what we're serving, but there will be food. If you have food allergies, please let Melissa know ASAP so special arrangements can be made. Voluntary "allergies" (ie, picky eaters), will not be accomodated, but I assure you that there will be variety so everyone will be able to find something they like.
What do I need to know about the bar?
We are having a cash bar! However, we are setting drink prices, so I assure you they will be extremely reasonably priced (less than $3 each, we think).
There will be a ticket-seller, so you can buy as many as you want at a time, however, the tickets will be non-refundable, so please only buy what you will consume (especially at the end of the night).

Pop, juice, water, domestic & import beer, red & white wine, coolers, and a variety of hard liquor will be available. The Bartender will be fully qualified, but if you often request drinks that bartenders don't know how to make, please look up the ingredients so you can tell them how to do it.

Please note that as Adam & Melissa are supplying the alcohol, we may not be bringing the product you normally drink. If you have a special request, or want to check on a product, please contact us and we will do our best to accomodate you.
Can we request songs from the DJ?
Yes, the DJ will play requests, but at their discretion. They are professionals, and know how to read a crowd. If you request a song that they think will ruin the mood, they have the right not to play it. They are also going to be given a list of songs which we absolutely do not want them to play (for a variety of reasons), and if you request one of these songs, it likely will not be played.

Please keep your requests respectful; vulgarity is one thing, but when every other word in a song is a swear, it doesn't belong at a wedding. The same goes for songs which are inappropriately themed, even if their language is clean. We want everyone to have a good time, and some songs just won't fit.

Also please note that though the DJ's have an extensive list of songs, they may not have what you are requesting. Please don't take it as a personal insult that they don't have your favorite song.
What about the Stamps game?
As you may or may not know, Adam & Melissa are big CFL fans. Luckily, the scheduled Stampeders game is an away game on the night of the wedding. It is being broadcast on CBC.
At the moment, we're not sure whether we will have a TV or radio set up at the reception to follow the game, or if we'll just record it and watch it on Sunday.

If you have opinions, post them in the forum! We'd love to hear from you.

Where did you register?
Adam and Melissa are a merger of two fully functional households, and have been living together for long enough to have everything that we need.
We do not expect guests to give gifts, however, if you choose to, please be aware that we did not register anywhere.
We don't need anything specific, but gift cards are always helpful. Places we shop often: Home Depot, Rona, Pet Planet, Petsmart, Real Canadian Superstore, Costco.
Other options: charitable donations in our name (charity of your choice or ask us for ones we support), money for a honeymoon fund.
Can you tell me about hotels?
If you are from out of town, we would be more than happy to work with you to get a group rate at a hotel near the reception venue. If you have questions about the quality of a hotel, do not hesitate to ask us to research it for you!

We will also be offering group rates for local guests who want to stay in a hotel after the party. However, we will need to have an idea in advance how many rooms will be needed, and cannot guarantee the rate or the availability if you do not advise us in advance.
What is there to do before the reception?
Calgary is a fantastic place and there's always something going on.

Year-round attractions include the Calgary Zoo, The Calgary Science Centre, The Glenbow Museum, The Calgary Tower, Canada Olympic Park, Devonian Gardens, Fort Calgary, Heritage Park, and many others.

Special events may also be happening, but we can't even begin to guess what they may be.

If you want recommendations, suggestions, or help figuring out what to do, please contact us.
My question wasn't answered here, what do I do?
Check the forums; it may have been answered there.
If not, you can ask it in the forum and see if someone else can answer.

Or you can email or call one of us and we'd be happy to help!
